Is it Worth is to Re-Screen Your Vents?

attic ventSome termite companies offer gable vent re-screening as a way to prevent termites from entering the attic. However, gable vents are just one potential entry point. Most attics also have soffit vents along the lower perimeter, which are difficult to access from inside and would look unsightly if re-screened from the outside using staples and screening material. If the soffit vents remain unprotected, re-screening only the gable vents provides minimal benefit and is not worth the cost.

A more effective solution is borating the exposed wood inside the attic. Borate makes the wood inedible to termites and provides lasting protection that can last indefinitely, as long as the wood stays dry. While borate application may cost more than vent re-screening, it offers a far more comprehensive preventive measure.

The key factor in borate treatment effectiveness is how thoroughly it is applied. It’s important to hire a company that takes the time to reach all areas of the attic and fully coat the framing. Consider these factors when choosing a provider:

  • How long did the termite inspector recommending the service spend in your attic? If they were in and out within minutes, they likely don’t fully understand the effort required to access every area. When the job is oversimplified, the technician may not be given enough time to complete the treatment thoroughly and effectively.
  • How many gallons of borate will be applied, and how long will the treatment take? If the company seems unsure of these details, look elsewhere.
  • Was the application thorough? If the technician finishes too quickly, request a reapplication by a different technician.

For homes in the framing stage, request food coloring be added to the borate mixture to visually confirm coverage. However, avoid this for attic or garage applications, as it may stain ceilings or stored items.

If borate treatment isn’t within your budget, a full-structure termite warranty is a better investment than vent re-screening. Termites are a fact of life in San Diego—it’s not a matter of if but when they’ll appear. Regular inspections, localized treatments, and return visits when activity is detected offer a far more proactive and effective approach than relying on small, incomplete preventatives.
