San Diego, California
San Diego, California
Home of our beloved Padres, San Diego has grown even fonder of its baseball team since the departure of the once-beloved Chargers. (Seriously, how can a city of nearly 1.4 million people, with unbeatable weather, not have at least an NFL team?)
San Diego was established in 1769 and incorporated in 1850, back when its homes were still affordable. While the population is technically 1.4 million, it often feels like two million when the beach is crowded or the freeway’s at a standstill.
The city is world-famous for its fantastic weather—except when your sister from back east visits, and it rains for ten straight days. The ocean is beautiful, but the water is always cold. San Diego residents marvel at out-of-state visitors who brave the ocean from October to March… and June.
San Diegans are quirky when it comes to weather: we break out the down jackets when it’s overcast, crank up the heaters if it dips into the 60s, and consider anything in the 50s downright freezing.
Every San Diego kid seems to be zipping around on an electric bike, and yes, gym class sometimes includes surfing.
The city is a tapestry of unique neighborhoods, from Rancho Bernardo and Carmel Valley to North Park, Hillcrest, and Pacific Beach. Despite their distinct identities, residents all write the same thing on their envelopes: “San Diego.”
Fun fact: San Diego’s official flower is the carnation. (It only took me 20 years to learn that.) If we’re assigning official symbols, the termite should be our city’s insect. The same climate that lures tourists also attracts termites. Tourists help the economy, and so do termites—at least if you’re in pest control.
